Sandra Newberry

Sandra Sue “Sandy” Newberry, 64, of Independence, died Sunday, April 7, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Hospice, Edgewood.

Sandy was born on December 19, 1948 in Dayton, Kentucky to the late Robert and Shirley Grimme Erskine.

She was a paraeducator with the Boone County School System and longtime member of Kento-Boo Baptist Church, Florence.

Sandy was a dedicated teaching assistant for Kindergartners at Florence Elementary for 25 years and touched the lives of everyone she worked with and many hundreds of children she helped to educate. This profession suited her perfectly, as she greatly enjoyed helping people in any way she could. Every now and then, she would be out and about and someone would recognize her as "Misses Blueberry", as she was affectionately known by the kids. The amount of encouragement and support that has come from Florence Elementary was overwhelming and will never be forgotten.

Sandra enjoyed singing in the church choir and attending worship at Kentoboo Baptist Church. She loved her church family. She was faithful to the end, attending sunday school and services until she was no longer physically capable. A special and heartfelt "Thank You" goes out to the Kentoboo church family, you all have been wonderful and supportive to all of us throughout this ordeal and more importantly, a source of spiritual strength and solace for many, many years.

One of the things Sandy was very proud of was the amount of support she received from her many friends and family. She collected the cards and letters and created a Prayer Wreath which she showed to everyone. The amount of support she received was a real source of strength for her as she battled her ovarian cancer for more than 2 years.

Survivors include her husband, David W. Newberry, son, Vic M. (Joy) Newberry of Independence; daughters, Kimberly N. (Paul) Hamrick of Hebron, Tanya L. (Denver) Cavins of Union; brothers, Bradley Carter of Cincinnati, Lonnie Carter of Dayton, Ohio; sister, Glenda Schadler of Erlanger and grandchildren, Alex, Vic, Jr., Grant, Trent, Robert, Cameron, Price, Jadyn and Jordyn.
