Ralph J. Glaser, Sr., 92, of Independence, and a long-time resident of Kenton County, died Monday, August 15, 2011 at Hospice of St. Elizabeth, Edgewood.

Mr. Glaser was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving as a Master Sergeant during World War II. He received many decorations and citations for his service including a Purple Heart (Battle of the Bulge), Battle Stars (Tunisa, Naples-Foggia, Normandy, Northern France, Adrennes, Rhineland), a European Theater Ribbon with seven Bronze Stars, the American Defense Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Ribbon.

Inducted into the service in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, he trained at the Calvary Training Center in Fort Riley, Kansas and was assigned to the 691st Tank Destroyer (TD) at Fort Bliss, Texas. He departed from New York in August, 1942 and sailed from England to Oran, Algeria in the winter of 1943. There he participated in the battles of Kassrine Pass, El Guettar in March, 1942 and Matuer, Tunisia in May, 1943. In October, 1943, he was deployed to Naples, Italy then back to England in December for training with the 7th Corps as Message Center Chief for the invasion of France. He was assigned on detached service aboard the USS Bayfield command ship for the June 6, 1944 invasion at Utah Beach.

In July, 1944, he participated in the Battle of St. Lo with the 1st Tank Destroyer Group. He fought in the Siege of Aachen in October and the Battle of the Bulge in December and January, for which he received his Purple Heart. In March, 1945 he participated in the Battle of Remagan Bridge Head. He was in Leipzig, Germany when the Germans surrendered on May 9, 1945.

Following his discharge from the service, Mr. Glaser owned and operated the 3L Garage thru the 1950’s, at which time he decided to go into the Home Building business where he remained until retiring in the early 1980’s. He was the developer of the Brown-Glaser subdivision on Richardson Road, which became incorporated as Ridgeview Heights until it was annexed by the City of Independence.

In his spare time, Mr. Glaser was a former Boy Scout Leader, a Knothole baseball coach, and a member of the American Legion Post # 275 of Independence. He loved hunting and training beagle dogs for rabbit hunting. He also enjoyed breeding and raising Tennessee Walkers, many of which he sold went on to successful careers at local fairs and horse shows.

On June 4, 2011 he and his wife, Margaret Brown Glaser, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Mr. Glaser was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Elizabeth Hildebrandt Glaser; brothers, John Glaser, Frank Glaser, Alfred Glaser and Fred Glaser; and sisters, Marcella Brown, Viola Smeal and Florence Flickinger.

Surviving with his wife, is his son, Ralph J. (Joyce) Glaser, Jr. of Erlanger; grandchildren, Ralph J. (Heather) Glaser, III of Hebron and Sherry (Cory Adkins) Glaser of Jonesboro, Tennessee; and great grandchildren, Sophia Glaser, Mackenzie Glaser, Catherine Adkins and William Adkins.
