Merrill Whitman Shields, 96, of Hebron and formerly of Gallatin Co., KY and Huntington, NY, died Sunday, January 31 at Bridgepoint Health Care Center in Florence. He was the retired Owner of Shields and Tomasch Press of Huntington, New York.
Mr. Shields was a United States Army Veteran, having served as a Private First Class during World War II. A former Prisoner of War, he was also a Purple Heart recipient and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, BPOE, and DAV Chapter 48, all of Huntington, New York. His hobbies included golfing.
Survivors include his daughters, Christine (Lew) Parsons of Jericho, Vermont and Merle-Lynn (Jeff) Sproul of Hebron; sons, Merrill W. Shields of Leland, North Carolina and Denis B. Shields of Media, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Heather Lynn Jones of Ithaca, New York, Melissa Jones (Preston) Whitaker of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, William Shields of Goleta, California, and Gina Shields of Wilmington, North Carolina; and great grandson, Desmond F. Whitaker of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy Randall and Evelyn Geist; and parents, William Joseph and Clara Belle Patton Shields.
