Justice Smoot

April 17, 1922 — March 10, 2011

Justice Owen Smoot, 88, of Florence, died Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Providence Pavillion of Covington. He was a maintenance worker with the U.S. Postal Service at Scott Street in Covington.

Mr. Smoot was a U.S. Navy Veteran, having served during World War II. He served on the USS Maryland and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans of Covington. He enjoyed playing the guitar and hiking.

Survivors include his step daughter, Margie Holcomb (Daniel) Gilbert of Florence; step sons, Billy (Nancy) Holcomb of Fort Thomas and Ricky (Pam) Holcomb of Eminence; brothers, Rufus Smoot of Lakeland, Florida and Charles Logan Smoot of Frankfort; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Blackaby Smoot in 1987; and his parents, Birdie and Susan Blackaby Smoot.
