James L. “Cootie” Brown, 93, of Hebron, died Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Florence. He was a retired Finish Roller with Interlake Steel of Newport.

Mr. Brown received a Bronze Star for his service in the Army during World War II. He was also a recipient of the Carnegie Hero Award for risking his own life to drag a man to safety from a burning building in Constance, Kentucky in January, 1963. He was a member of Hebron Lutheran Church and the Bromley Vets.

Mr. Brown was elected to the Ludlow High School Sports Hall of Fame. He enjoyed playing poker and spending time at the Hebron McDonalds.

Survivors include son, Bartley (Vicki) Brown, Hebron; daughter, Barbara (Allan) Cook, Burlington; grandchildren, Travis, Carrie, Jonathan, and Ashley; and great grandchildren, Zoe, Lawson, and Grayson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Eichmuller Brown; and parents, Lawson and Carrie Aylor Brown.

Visitation is Friday, January 11, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon at Hebron Lutheran Church, 3140 Limaburg Road, Hebron. Funeral service to follow at 12:00 Noon at the church. Interment, with military honors,at Hebron Lutheran Cemetery. MIDDENDORF-BULLOCK FUNERAL HOME, HEBRON, is serving the family.
