Harry E. “Gene” Hammons, 90, of Crestview Hills, formerly of Ludlow, passed away Wednesday morning surrounded by his family.
Gene was born on June 5, 1933, in Ludlow, Kentucky to Dewey and Leona (Fightmaster) Hammons. He was a veteran, having served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Gene worked for Trailmobile in his early years but spent most of his working career as a Conductor for the Southern Railroad, now the Norfolk Southern Railroad. Following his retirement from the railroad, he was a Funeral Assistant at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home many years.
Gene was a member of Kento-Boo Baptist Church, Florence; a Past Master of Unity Lodge F & AM formerly of Ludlow; a member of Colonel Clay F & AM Masonic Lodge #159; member of the Covington Scottish Rites and he held the rare and distinguished honor of being a 33rd Degree Mason. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers.
Surviving is his wife of 70 years (their 71st anniversary would have been on January 31), Loretta (Steele) Hammons; daughter, Kimberly Hammons; sons, Douglas (Lynn) Hammons and Jeffrey Hammons; grandson, Jeffrey Easton; a sister, Martha (Clifford) Daly; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation is 4:00 pm to 5:45 pm Monday, January 8, 2024, at the Kento-Boo Baptist Church, Florence. Scottish Rite services to begin at 5:45 pm and a funeral service to follow at 6:00 pm. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at the Spring Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Kentucky.
