"I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." Psalm 4:8
Doris Evelyn, youngest child of Harry and Hazel Houze Washmuth, was born on October 18, 1933 at the family farm near East Enterprise, Indiana. She joined sisters, Leona and Wilma, and brother, Harold, to complete the family circle. As a baby, she was given the nickname "Dot" which she retained all of her life.
She received her elementary education in the one room schools of Cotton Township and was graduated with the class of 1950 at Vevay High School. She was an excellent student and the love of reading, which began in those years, became a lifetime pleasure.
In 1945, she became a baptized member of the New Liberty Baptist Church and was active in the church as long as she lived in Indiana. She retained membership in the church and came back often to attend special events at the church.
After high school, Dot worked for a few years in offices in Vevay, Indiana including a stint as Deputy Clerk while her father served as Clerk of the Court of Switzerland County. She then went to Boone County, Kentucky where she spent the remainder of her life. She first worked as a dispatcher for TransWorld Airlines and later for ComAir until her retirement.
While working at the Greater Cincinnati Airport, she met the love of her life, Clarence H. Goff, Jr. They were married at the New Liberty Church on July 1, 1961 and spent 51 years together--never being apart except for time spent in hospitals. In the Air Force, Clarence also had acquired a nickname, "Charlie." So they were always simply, Dot and Charlie, to their family and friends.
They had no children but were a loving aunt and uncle to four nieces and four nephews. Birthdays and Christmas were never forgotten even into the following generation of great nieces and nephews.
Dot and Charlie did everything together--housecleaning, yard work, vegetable gardening, and cutting firewood. Dot was an excellent housekeeper and cook and loved growing flowers. They shared a passion for travel. In early years, they went by auto or airplane to every part of the United States and into Canada. They enjoyed several ocean cruises including one through the Panama Canal. Another outstanding trip was to New Zealand and Australia. A final, extended trip through the United States was by AmTrack.
Five months ago, Dot's deteriorating health required her to be hospitalized. She was able to be moved to a nursing home for short periods of time afterward but, each time, she would soon require hospitalization again. She passed away peacefully at the Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg, Indiana on August 10, 2012.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Leona Cummings.
She is survived by her loving husband, Clarence; brother, Harold (Doris) Washmuth of Valley Station, Kentucky; sister, Wilma (the late Karl) Lohide of Rising Sun, Indiana; brother-in-law, Robert (Maggie) Goff, Sr. of Florissant, Missouri; nephews, Robert (Linda) Goff, Jr. of New Baden, Illinois, Paul (Linda) Lohide of Rising Sun, Indiana, Kurt Lohide of Napa, California, and Thomas (Loretta) Cummings of Brandy Station, Virginia; and nieces, Carol (John) Fox of Richmond, Virginia, Diana (Francis) Clementi of Louisville, Deborah (Chester) West of Louisville, and Cindy (Rory) Clark of St. Charles, Missouri.
Visitation is Monday, August 13, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Funeral Service is Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Reverend J.E. Baker officiating. Interment at New Liberty Cemetery, East Enterprise, Indiana.
Memorials are suggested to the New Liberty Baptist Church, P. O. Box 119, East Enterprise, IN 47019.
Dot will be sadly missed by her family, neighbors, and friends.
