Denise M. Denham Savage, 54, of Union, died Friday, February 13 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. She was a retired Elementary School Teacher with the Boone County School System. She taught for 25 years at New Haven Elementary, Union.
Mrs. Savage was a member of Point Pleasant Church of Christ in Hebron.
While teaching, she was active with Academic Teams and Kentucky Odyssey of the Mind. She was a former Board Member of Kentucky Odyssey of the Mind and was the Kentucky State Problem Captain for Spontaneous Problem Solving as well as a Judge of Odyssey of the Mind World Finals. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa (International Honorary Teaching Sorority.) Mrs. Savage was an ardent supporter of equality in pay for teachers and helped to negotiate better conditions and salaries for Boone County teachers. A leader in innovative programs in classroom teaching, she attended many workshops to benefit her students.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Savage; son Cameron Savage of Indianapolis; daughter, Erin (Eric) Nine of Walton; sisters, Dru M. Baker, of Eustis, Florida, Dorelle M. Hogan of Columbus, Indiana, and Diana M. Johnson of Alberta, Canada; brother, Daryl Denham of Burlington; granddaughter, Addison Nine; and brother-in-law, Larry Gerding.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Daria M. Gerding; and parents, Ralph T. and Margaret Smart Denham.
